“I’ll tell you a secret. Shhhh…” I say as my heart flutters a beat. It’s out of rythm, strange, unsure. I take a breath and let it out.

Will they judge me? Think I’m strange? Rip me a new one in the comments?

“I’ve never used Groupon. I’m a Groupon virgin.”

Before everyone starts freaking out I’ll be honest. Until a few days ago I thought Groupon was a scam. Like my old school father I’ve heard a few news stories about Groupon scams and assumed all Groupon coupons followed suit.

But on the other hand…

I’ve had so many friends and family members tell me about great deals that they have gotten through Groupon. I couldn’t handle the suspense anymore. I decided that it was time I investigated for myself. Here’s the rundown on how Groupon works and how you can save big without falling into scams.

What’s Groupon?

Groupon is a website that provides visitors discounts on goods and services. It’s available to the public and you don’t have to pay a few to become a member.

How does it work?

Groupon works a little differently depending on where you are planning on using it. For several large stores, a coupon code isn’t required! You simply click on their Groupon link and instant savings are issued to your cart. For other stores, Groupon will issue you a code that you can use at checkout. Everytime I shop online I always look for coupon codes before checking out anyway. For me, Groupon simplifies the process.

Where can I use Groupon

Where can I use it?

Before my research I thought that only local, expensive places used Groupon. That’s not the case. You can use Groupon for almost anywhere. To name just a few places, you can use it at:

Home Depot

Turbo Tax

Victoria’s Secret

… I could go on. Big brands trust Groupon and you should too! I know I shop at all of these placed already, so why not save an extra few dollars along the way?

After researching Groupon and finding out that it’s a legitamate way to save money, I’ll never go back to my old ways of online shopping again. Have you had a good experience with Groupon? Let me know in the comments below.
